TUESDAY 9.2.99 6.20pm
Sorry about not writing until now but I’ll fill you in on what’s happened since then.
On Tuesday 26th January Markus and I found an apartment with x2 bedrooms, large lounge, kitchen, bathroom, etc. It had central heating. The landlady wanted 1000 DEM (500 each) so after a bit of bargaining we got it but at the same price including electricity and heating. The boiler is coal fired, so we promptly moved out of the old house, it was freezing and progressively getting colder. In the new house the radiators were barley warm so at midnight we both trouped off to the old house and slept there. It turned out that the water pump was switched off so there was no heat circulating. The old landlord was most put out but stuff, him he was getting very greedy for money!!
On 27th January spent the day getting warm!!!
28th January sorted the unpacking out etc and had a few beers. Can’t remember much after that.
On 30th January went on CTO to England. The plane was delayed as it was blowing a real blizzard in Sarajevo but we managed to take off and I got home okay. Was met by Del, Catherine and Brian at the airport (Heathrow), I flew with Adria Airlines. Had several days at home and then came back last Monday 8th February: First I stayed the night at Shirley’s and then caught the 10.05am flight for Ljubljana (Slovenia). Got there at 1pm local time and was told that due to bad weather (snow) in Sarajevo the flight outwards was cancelled. We were taken to a nice hotel and I thought “Great”, it was like a mini holiday. I had a shower, a good meal then a few beers. At 8pm we were told that we were flying that night so off we all trouped again to the airport. Got into Sarajevo at 10.45pm and it was bitter. Markus picked me up and we went straight to Sebastian but I didn’t feel like a drink. In the end we had one drink and then came home!!
Today (9.2.99) I’ve already booked my last CTO from 13 March to 25th that includes the rest of my leave and travel days. That’ll give me two weeks left in Bosnia. I honestly don’t know whether to feel happy or not about it, it’s a pig in winter but great in summer!! Didn’t do much at work today. I knocked out a letter to HQ (P) regarding where I want to be posted to on my return and helped a few folk out with incidents. That’s about it for now, See Ya!!!!

FRIDAY 12.2.99 5.05pm
Let’s see, what have I done in the last few days!!
On Wednesday I went to Visoko with Aleksandra and Zdenko (bringing Del’s old jacket) and ordered her a new leather jacket. It was pouring with rain and had melted all the snow. In the night went to Sebastian. It started snowing at about 5pm and never stopped. Also in the middle of a blizzard we had thunder and lighting – incredible!!
Yesterday it was still snowing so I didn’t do a lot except hang about the station. At night I watched a couple of video’s and had a few cups of tea “Čaj”. I then read for a while and went to bed at about 12.30am. Markus went out to Sebastian but I didn’t feel like it. Got up at 7.30am this morning and went to work. In the afternoon went to Ilijaš and saw Muhammed and Zdenko. Had a coffee with them and then got called to go to an accident involving the German SFOR and an Italian car (Lancia) on M18 Highway (Sarajevo – Zenica) at Malešići. The car was a write off, it collided with a petrol tanker in the snow. There were no injuries so I copped a few details and legged it. Got back to Vogošća at 3.30pm and did the report, after that all was okay. Finished at 4.30pm and went home. Tonight I may go to Sebastian for a pint.
Forgot to mention that Del’s coat/ jacket will be ready about 1st March!! (5.20pm). An old fart has just walked into the house to stoke the fire up, he’s a real pain in the arse!! He lives here when we’re at work!!!!!
Tomorrow we’ve got a few bus loads of Serbs coming to Ilijaš for graveyard visits. There’s no trouble expected but I’ve had to organise extra IPTF patrols, liaise with SFOR (Germans) and the local police so at last we’ve got A PLAN!!! I’ll co-ordinate it all tomorrow (wow). (old farts just left – great) sometimes I wonder who pays the rent here!!! It’s stopped snowing but its still cold (obviously). Markus goes on leave on Monday and Baloch goes on Sunday so I’m in charge of the station after tomorrow, oh the heady responsibility. (Another 29 days and I’ll be on leave again!!!). After that it’s 14 days left and I’ve finished!!!
See Ya!!

WEDNESDAY 17.2.99 6.45pm
Again, I’ve not written for a while because to be quite honest I’ve felt too cold to carry on!! This house at Izetta Delića № 11 is very cold, the heating is coal fired and not very adequate. The graveyard visit went okay, last Saturday 13th there were 4 coach loads and no trouble at all.
On Sunday 14th had a “doss day” and went into work at 8.45am. (I still beat some of the Pakistani’s!!!).
On Monday went to Ilijaš and saw Zdenko and Muhammed, couldn’t stay very long though as there was another accident involving SFOR (German) at Podlugovi, after dealing with that went back to the nick and then ran Markus to the airport for his leave. At least it wasn’t snowing too much. At present the roads are clearing a bit now although it’s still very dangerous.
Yesterday (Tuesday) I was supposed to attend a Station Commanders Meeting at Regional H.Q. and forgot all about it. I realised at 1pm that I should have been there at 11.30am. So, I went down and ate humble pie.
Today had a meeting with Zdenko and Muhammed again and also with OSCE Human Rights Officer. After that went to yet another road traffic accident at Nišići which is miles away from Vogošća (about 25 miles) but it’s still in our area of responsibility. An army lorry had side swiped a civilian bus on the road from Sarajevo to Tuzla, only minor damage though. Tonight I’ve done a bit of ironing and had some food (stew) so I think that I’ll go out. Last night I stayed in watching a couple of videos!! See Ya.

THURSDAY 18.2.99 5.28pm
After writing last night I went out to “Sebastian” coffee bar at about 8.00pm and had a few Laško beers. Met a few local people that I know and also Stewart McCuvin who is a civvy working for a telephone company out here. The bar maid Elvira was having some domestic problems with her husband/ boyfriend, he was drunk and totally obnoxious. In the end his mates dragged him out of the place!!! Stuart got done drink/drive by the local cops last November 1998. He went to court and paid a fine and the judge said that was the end of it. Now the local cops are trying to take his licence for a 3 month ban. I went and saw the police chief and apparently it’s a court order. I saw Stuart and told him so tomorrow we’ll go to the court and see the judge to sort it out.
Today had a meeting with the Mayor of Vogošća, Italian SFOR, Bosnian Army etc regarding “Operation Harvest”. There’s going to be an arms amnesty and they’re going to collect more weapons from the public. We’ve got another meeting (more informal) on Monday 22nd Feb at 2.30pm. Also today had a couple of Serb Citizens come into the station complaining about the police etc. I’ll have to sort that out tomorrow with the police chief. Today I’ve been quite busy what with doing the check point policy reports and going to meetings etc.
Weatherwise it snowed a bit last night but it was a beautiful sunny day. I hope that spring comes early, I’m getting a bit fed up with the cold now. This house is awful, it would be lovely to be able to sit down, watch T.V. and not start getting colder and colder!!! Three weeks and two days left until CTO and after that it’s downhill all the way. I’ve got mixed feelings about leaving and going back to “normality” again. Oh well, we’ll see. Must go now, I’m freezing cold and hungry. First I’ll have to put some coal in the boiler. See Ya!!!

FRIDAY 19.2.99 4.35pm
Had an early night last night, watched T.V. (wearing my leather jacket) and then went to bed at about 10.30pm. Went to the court this afternoon with Stuart and saw the Judge re his problem. She’s going to seek advice from higher authorities so he should know on Monday what’s happening. It didn’t snow today (whoopee) problem is the water's off so I can’t put the central heating on!! SO I’m off to Sebastian for a pizza!! See Ya.
SUNDAY 21.2.99 4.25pm
Had a good night at Sebastian last Friday, came out at 1.30am and felt awful for work the next day.
On Saturday we received a few fax’s regarding Kosovo and the Brčko arbitration. There’ll be no trouble on this side but in Republika Srpska I think that things will get hot. Anyway, I dossed about the nick for most of the day and then went to the ‘AS’ supermarket in Sarajevo and bought some beef, chicken, corned beef, spuds etc. I had roast beef, roast spuds, runner beans and gravy – very nice. I then watched TV and kept falling asleep so went to bed at 1.30am. Getting into that cold bed soon woke me up though!!!
Today nothing happened so I sent three of the language assistants home early and just kept one on standby in the station. Poor old Einstein was in the wars last night, he must have had a fight because he’s now on three legs at the moment and feeling very sorry for himself. I’ve fed him on scraps of beef and he’s now taking it easy in the station. Weatherwise it’s not snowed for a few days and it’s definitely warmer during the day. I hope that this thaw continues! Twenty more nights to go before CTO and then after that only thirteen more nights left in Bosnia!! Also – it’s pay day on the 24th February (hurray)!! Markus comes back form CTO tomorrow so I’ll go and pick him up at the airport. I’ll now try and phone home, I bet that it’s engaged though!! 4.55pm surprise, surprise I got through okay. Well I’d better go and get my washing and cooking done. See Ya!!

MONDAY 22.2.99 9.30pm
Weather is still “de-frosting” nicely, again it’s been a warmer day today although its been raining for most of it. Today had a man come to the station stating that he had his car Audi 80 Diesel taken by force by the Chief of Ilijaš PD in April 1992 and now he’s found out that the vehicle is being used by the police in Pale in Republika Srpska!! I’ve made an incident report on it and will see what we can do!!! At 12.45pm ran Edin into Main HQ at Sarajevo for his pay and then went to the Municipality (Općina) at Vogošća for a meeting re the weapons amnesty. It’s going to be around the first week in April. After that I dossed about the station and had a telephone call from Zdenko asking when would I go to Ilijaš so I promised that I’d see him tomorrow. You wouldn’t believe this but it’s just started snowing heavily again! What a bummer!!
At 5pm I went to the airport to pick Markus up and had a 2 ½ hour wait as his flight was delayed because of snow at Munich!! When we got back I tried to telephone another guy whom I’m supposed to be taking to the airport for his CTO at 5.20am in the morning. I found out that our phones been cut off because of none-payment. That’s our landlady for you! The bill that’s not paid is December-January. We only owe January-February and we’ve not had the bill yet!!! She’s going to be in for a gob full tomorrow!! Well, I’ll be off now as I’m tired and want an early night tonight. Last night I went to Sebastian until 10.30pm and then fell asleep watching T.V. until 3am today!! Woke up freezing as well! That’s it folks, See Ya!!

WEDNESDAY 24.2.99 5pm
Yesterday (Tuesday) I met Safet (Station Commander) at Vogošća and had a couple of beers with him from 10.30am to 11.30am. We chatted about this and that, nothing really in general, I then went to Ilijaš and saw Zdenko. We went to “Diana” a pizza/ coffee bar just outside Ilijaš and had a beer. I gave my car keys to someone else and stayed there until 6pm. Adamu came and picked me up, so I had a good time.
Today drew my wages and cheque! At 11.30am Vehid came to the station and reminded me about the football match between Ilijaš Police and Olovo Police at the indoor stadium in Vogošća. I went down and watched the match. Ilijaš won 4-2!!! Had a coke with Muhammed, Vehid and Zdenko after the match and then went back to work at 1.30pm. Nothing much doing after that.
The snow was really bad again yesterday. I drove Christoph to the airport for his CTO at 5.30am. Today it’s clearing again. The suns been out and the skies are clear so it’s going to be a cold night. The phone bills come in – we owe 153 DEM in total which isn’t bad compared to what the bills were in the other house. Problem is our phones been cut off because the bloody landlady didn’t pay the bills!!! We’ve been promised that it’ll be on line again shortly. That’s about it for now, I’m off for a wash and to get changed. See Ya!!

THURSDAY 25.2.99 5.05pm
Last night we got the vet out for Einstein, he’s got an infection in his leg because of fighting (was bit by another dog) and he can only walk on three legs, he’s also not eating. The vet gave him some shots and said that he should be better in about three days, lets wait and see. I stayed in last night reading and watching the T.V. When I got up this morning it had snowed again and was still snowing until about 9am. Once again it’s clearing, so fingers crossed!! I went to Croatia Airlines to book my flight today but the computers were down so I’ve given my dates 13th–25th March and telephone number at IPTF Vogošća so it’s sit and wait now!! This afternoon went to the PX and bought 1000 fags (Marlborough Lights) a zippo lighter (plain) some beer and a bottle of Gordon’s Gin to take home. I’m also trying to amass some cigs now that I’m leaving in April!! Just had a phone call saying that one of the Indian Monitors has broken the key inside the crook lock of a vehicle that he’d parked in Sarajevo. I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do – it’s his problem not mine – stupid git!!! Tonight Markus and I are off to Sebastian for a drink. I don’t want to come home too late though. I’ll be off now – See Ya!!!
FRIDAY 26.2.99 7.22pm
Came back from “Sebastian” at about 9pm, watched T.V. for a while and then fell asleep whilst watching it. Woke up at about 1am freezing and got into an equally freezing bed!! Adamu’s just come into the house with the car keys so I’ve had to drop him off back up the road – he’s another stupid git – I have to think for him!!! Weatherwise it’s been a nice day today, the snows thawing yet again. I’ve still not heard anything from Croatian Airlines which doesn’t surprise me!! I’ll attack them again on Monday and see if I can book my ticket home. (15 more nights to go including tonight!).
I don’t know, sometimes I feel a bit disillusioned regarding the work here. We’ve got a station full of supposedly police officers and ¾ of them are totally useless. There were a couple of jobs come in today but Adamu and most of the others have no idea what to do – they’re just so lazy and stupid!! I’ll write down all the names and you’ll see what I mean 1. BALOCH INKHATAS (Pakistan) Stn Commander (1/3 man). 2. Me Deputy Stn Commander – (does everyone’s job). 3. MARKUS GIESE Admin Officer – okay (German). 4. MUSAH, ADAMU:- Ghana, Human Rights Investigator – Useless. 5. NAMAL, ERTUĞRUL Turkey:- Brain dead. 6. SATURDAY 27.2.99 4.55pm
Didn’t go out last night, I just dossed about and watched T.V. Finally got to bed at about 1am. Got up this morning at 7.45am feeling groggy. There were a couple of memo’s I had to do, one of them was about info of a big SFOR exercise in Srednje on 2.3.99 so I knocked that out and got it translated. I also went to Butmir and bought a load of CD’s for myself – (why not!!). Also got a couple for Shirley. I’m now sitting in the house drinking beer and listening to Eco’s Greatest Hits – I’ve also got the Everly Brothers, Édith Piaf and loads more – great!! Markus said that he’d buy some steak tonight but he’s not back yet! Oh well, who feels like eating!! See Ya!
PS phoned Del – told her I’d got Shirley’s CD’s – all’s okay at № 97 Latimer, See Ya!!
