August
TUESDAY 4.8.98 6pm
Met Del as planned on 23rd July and had a good time. When I saw her off on Monday 27th July I realised that I would miss the kids, especially Brian and Catherine so I went and drew my pay and booked a flight home for 28th to 2nd August. (Had to take another days leave as well). On arrival back on 2nd August met my Landlady for the first time and she laced into me re the state of the house!! It’s all clean now!! At the moment I’m broke!!
I won’t get paid until 26th of the month and I’ve got 500 DM to my name. I’ve paid the rent etc so I should be okay!! The weather is even hotter than before. Last night there was a farewell party for Yasser and Moayyad and we all just sat and sweated. I had about five cans of beer and went to bed at 11pm, I felt awful. Today I’ve been mixing salt and water in an effort to replace what I’ve lost in sweat!!!
There has been a slight drop of rain just now but it’s not cooled things down very much. After starting work yesterday I’m back in the swing of things doing all sorts of follow-up investigations and flying about all over the place. Today I saw Muhammed at Ilijaš and had a cup of coffee with him in his new Chiefs Office!!! I really feel sticky and horrible, this heat wave must break soon, even my ears are glowing. Ah-ha I’ve just heard some thunder a good distance off, maybe we’ll be in for a good storm tonight. At the party last night Dicky Atatoy (Indonesia) gave me a tee-shirt with all the guys names on it. He had them made up when he went back home. I think it was really good of him.

WEDNESDAY 5.8.98 4.45pm
Work as per usual today. Went in at 8am and then found out I was supposed to be on afternoons (4pm-10pm). Unfortunately I had a lot of work on and reports to do so I ended up on the computer for most of the day. Last night I thought sod it and went and had a few beers at the Indian Bar for 7.30pm to 9.30pm. I then went to bed!! Hope I can last out on my cash, I’m down to 500 DM until the 20th!!! I’ll have to live on 20 DM per day!!! It’s not been so hot today after the thunderstorm we had last night but it’s still sweaty weather!! At the moment I’m having a cup of tea whilst writing this and I’m sitting on the settee wearing just a pair of underpants!!
The main item at work today is a suicide that happened last week. An elderly Serb laid on the grave of his family in Podlugovi and then stabbed himself in the heart. A couple of Indians did the incident report – it’s got lots of names but is absolute crap. Half the Serb press are calling it murder and I’m getting telephone calls from all sorts of people. Tomorrow I’ve arranged a meeting with Zdenko who is Chief of Crime Department at Ilijaš. I’ll have to get full details and do a decent report to get the bloody thing closed!!! I’ll get off now and get some household duties done – see you!!

FRIDAY 7.8.98 5.40pm
Let’s see, since last writing:- When I last wrote I did a bit of tidying up and then went to the German PX at Rajlovac for some cigarettes. I ended up buying the fags and a bottle of Bacardi. I then went to the Indian Bar equipped with the said Bacardi, some ready made ice, x2 lemons and cigs!! I then shared it with Boris and Micky! It was quite a cheap night really, the 200 fags + 1 litre Bacardi cost me 26 DM!!!
Got up on Thursday 6th feeling a bit rough and at 8am walked into the station to find that a kind Indian monitor had made out an incident on the computer and then put my name to it!!! We have hardly any interpreters at the moment so I couldn’t do a lot with it. I did see the complainant and got a statement from him. He’s moaning because a local cop at Vogošća hit him in the face!!! Didn’t manage to do much on Thursday and finished work at 4.30pm. After that I just stayed at home all night watching T.V. For a meal I opened up a tin of “goulash” (it’s crap) and peeled some spuds. Had that with a tin of spring beans.
Today 7th August went into work at 8 and had the usual hanging round before I could get hold of an interpreter at 11am. Went straight to Vogošća and saw Assistant Station Commander Catic, Sulejman about the local cop who had hit a member of public!! Arranged a further meeting at 10am Monday 10th August re the above. (It’s now been designated a “Human Rights Case” by Regional HQ!!!). Load of rubbish!!!
Forgot to add – yesterday (6th August 1998) got a call from Ilijaš stating that they had a convoy of English vehicles stopped and camping near to main road in Ilijaš. I went down with Muhammed (now Chief of Police) and found 14 vehicles, lorries, buses etc and the dirtiest lot of New Age Travellers I’ve ever seen!! We moved them on out of Canton Sarajevo and I was called a “Fascist Pig” I felt quite at home!!! Anyway, back to the present – sorted out the suicide from the other day (I hope) and at lunch time I went to the market and (thinking about the tin of "Home Pride Cook-In Curry Sauce” “Family Size”) in my cupboard bought x4 chicken legs/thighs, some spuds, carrots, onions and peppers and prepared the lot in a big pan. I cut the meat from the raw chicken and peeled some spuds and an onion and simmered them in oil together with the pepper. After that when the spuds were nearly done I added the sauce and simmered again. It tasted great with rice – I feel like a stuffed pig now!!! Tonight I’m also on nights at 10pm until 8am – good isn’t it!!!
A couple of days ago I booked my CTO, its 28th August until 2nd September. It’s about the only time off I could get because of the elections coming up. (No time off between 4th and 27th September).

SATURDAY 8.8.98 8pm
Had a terrible day/night shift, was duty officer, Ismail was monitor and Olivera interpreter. Went on duty at 9.40pm and took over from Felix. Ismail rolled in at 10.30pm. At 11.30pm got a call from Novi Grad Local Police Station that they had found a body of a male in a rubbish bin at a village called Bojnik in a field near a playground. I said that I’d go and after getting a torch set off with Olivera. We spent an hour driving round the middle of nowhere in the pitch dark and then ended up with a puncture. On the Nissan Patrols you have to jack the spare wheel down and it was rusted in so I had no chance. Eventually I managed to get Ismail to come out and we used the spare from his vehicle. We got back to Vogošća at 1.30am and I got Olivera to phone Novi Grad for directions. Whilst she was on the phone they told her that they had two in custody for kidnapping and serious assault in our area!!! Eventually we met the police patrol at Bojnik, they had secured the scene and were waiting for daylight to conduct an investigation. Re the two in custody they had been bedded down and would be interviewed in the morning. We got back to the nick at 3am and I did the reports for handover. I finally got my head down at 3.45am and was up again at 6.45am!! By the time I got relieved at 8.30am I felt like a zombie. Went to bed at 9am and got up at 6.30pm feeling just as bad!! Why is it always me that never gets any sleep on nights – everybody else does!! Tonight’s my last night, then I’m on morning shift on Monday (8am-4pm) I’ll be busy then with everything. I finished off that curry this evening, had it with bread – it was okay and filled the spot. At least I’m saving money. I’ve now got 450 DM to see me through until payday on the 26th.
At the moment there’s a load of crap on the T.V. I think that I’ll go and get a shower + shave. See Ya.

SUNDAY 9.8.98 8.45pm
Hello! Nothing happened on nights last night, got my head down at about 12.30am but didn’t sleep very well. Up again at 6.30am this morning and drove the interpreter Selma home to Sarajevo at 7.30am. Finished work at 8.30am then read a book (pens going funny) until 1.30pm. I then went to sleep until 6pm. I feel done-in and rather fed-up at the moment. There’s absolutely nothing to do. I’ve read the only book I’ve got, I’ve got no-one to talk to and I’m sweating like a pig!! I even walked down to the Indian Bar half an hour ago although I didn’t feel like a drink and that’s closed. Oh for some English speaking company!! These two night shifts seem to have done me in, I feel like hell and I’m miserable!!
Just for something to do I turned out all my pockets and I’ve got the grand total of 487 DM to my name!! I don’t know what I’m going to do when I’m off on the 28th to the 2nd September, I’d like to go and visit Igor in the Ukraine but I’d have to cash my dollar cheque and Del wouldn’t like that!!!! I feel like a bloody financial refugee!! I can afford to go home but I'd have no cash to live on with for leave, or to live on back here!!! One thing’s for sure I’ll have to go away somewhere to keep my sanity.
See you later diary – I don’t want to moan too much!!!

TUESDAY 11.8.98 6.50pm
Missed yesterday again!! A German guy called Markus moved in yesterday – company at last! He’s been on the afternoon shift for the past couple of days so I’ve hardly seen him. Have been busy since I last wrote. On Monday went to see Chief of Crime at Ilijaš (Zdenko) to clear up a couple of small jobs and ended up at an exhumation in the Muslim cemetery at Ilijaš. They had been digging a new grave and came across a coffin ½ metre down. The corpse was fully clothed and with shoes on. This is not a Muslim burial!! It’s suspected that there will be several other bodies buried in the unused part of the cemetery. We are now waiting for the earth moving machines. When all is ready a team will be formed from Canton Sarajevo – Investigators, Judge, Prosecutor, Doctor, Forensic team, Zdenko + me and we’ll start! After attending that went to Vogošća and collected a load of statements re the complaint against officer Smajlović (alleged to have hit and knocked a tooth out of a civilians face). The investigation stinks and I’m definitely on Smajlović's side on this one. 5pm Monday night went with Markus to German PX and got 200 cigs and a bottle of Bacardi. Had a few drinks (not too much) decided I was hungry at 11pm went downtown and it was all closed up – story of my life!!! Up at 7.30am this morning (Tuesday) went out with Stefan and interpreter Aleksandra to Ilijaš and then Vogošća to meet Police Chief re complaint against Smajlović, told the Chief that I was on his side and got that sorted. Went back to the nick and spent from 3pm to 6pm on the computer putting the translated statements onto “Lotus Notes” (it goes with the original incident report as a “follow-up report”).
Got home at 6pm and washed shirt + socks. I’m now ready to go out!! Forgot to mention I met Jonathan Sutch at Vogošća today, he popped in to say hello. Judge Finn is on leave in Norway at the moment but there’s a very good chance of me getting the job in October when Jonathan leaves. I also asked about how the Brčko job went (Page 104). In the end they actually “pulled” some politician so I got a “result” out of it!! Jonathan will fax me a copy of the report! I’m off now for a bite to eat and a couple of beers. See Ya.

SATURDAY 15.8.98 4.40pm
Let’s see, last Wednesday have been busy with complaint against officer Smajlović at Vogošća PD. At last I sorted it out and got him off the hook. It took seven statements and a lot of time on the computer to do it. At night have been going out with Markus:- Wednesday night went to a coffee bar in Vogošća and got ratted!!! Last night by 8pm I was done in so had an early night. Today I did nothing apart from drive to Ilijaš and have a coffee with Zdenko in his office. He was interviewing a juvenile gypsy boy aged 15 years who had been stealing so he threw him out whilst we had coffee!!! We are having a party on the 26th of this month (pay day) and I’ve bought x2 bottles Bacardi (correction, we’ve bought) x1 bottle gin, x3 cases beer, 12 bottles of sparkling wine (Sekt) a couple of cases of coke and a case of bitter lemon for mixers!!!
The two Hungarians, Zsolt and Gergely are also throwing in so it should be a good “do”. Markus got the washing machine going so I’ve got a load of kit in it at the moment!!! The bloody heel of my shoe is dropping off, it needs some super glue to fix it. I’m having to wear boots which is not very pleasant in this hot weather!! At the moment there’s an American film on the T.V. (Serb channel) and I’m having a cup of tea whilst the washings on so I’m getting things done!! (Actually I’ve got no clean shirts so when they’re dry I’ll have to iron them!!!).
Markus is on afternoon shift today but Baloch is coming round for a drink tonight!! Last night I was so tired, I went to bed at 9.30pm and promptly fell asleep until the alarm went off at 7am!!! That’s about it for now. Yesterday I had to attend a Human Rights meeting at Kula. We went to a restaurant and with it being on the Serb side I had pork!! Very nice!! Also yesterday a filling dropped out – it was the big one from the back of my head, I’ll have to sort it when I go home!!

FRIDAY 21.8.98 7pm
Can’t think of what’s gone on since last wrote, have been on a course all week re Human Rights but it was very basic. Started at 9am and finished at 5pm daily – was rather insulting to the intelligence!! Also this week managed to set the satellite dish up and it works, problem is we’ve got the wrong bloody satellite – it wants tuning towards the Astra one. Markus has been busy buying beer and spirits for the party we’re going to have on 26th of this month. Trouble is he drinks instead of saves them. (This bloody pen keeps packing up!!). I’m on 8-4 and then 10-8 night tomorrow so that should be fun.
Got up this morning at 7.15am to the sound of loud thunder and rain. It warmed up again later on but it’s not been as hot as normal. As I’m writing this I’m drinking a can of Warsteiner Beer courtesy of Markus – but he doesn’t know yet!!
There’s not a great deal happening at present, also during the week got the washing machine going so the lady who does mine has been cancelled. That’ll save me 100 DM P/M.
I’m looking forward to my break on the 28th of this month. I’ll have to make my way from Heathrow but it’ll be worth it!! Tomorrow also have a Human Rights meeting at Pale, I don’t really want to go as it’s just not worth it – but have got to fly the flag. Pale is on the Serb side in Republika Srpska. We’ll probably go to a restaurant!! Five more days to pay day. I’ve got 100 DM left and feel like a pauper!! Roll on the 26th!! As they say in this country “SVAKI DAN ISTA STARA SRANJE”. Every day the same old shit!!! See You!!!

SUNDAY 23.8.98 9.55pm
For a start I was on nights on 21.8.98!! I found out I was duty officer at 9.30pm, it’s a good job I hadn’t gone out. At 3am got a phone call stating that the police at Vogošća had found a corpse of a hunter at Ravne-Semizovac. Trouble was it was a 40 minute walk into the hills to get to it. I left that one for the morning shift to deal with when it was light. Turned out the deceased had tried to club a pig with a double-barrelled shotgun and shot himself in the gut. He bled to death. Was on nights last night as well. We had a “special op” with local cops at Srednje stopping vehicles looking for stolen ones. It was a big waste of time.
Today it’s a lot colder and I’ve slept for most of the time. I’m just having a Bacardi and coke at the moment. Haven’t done much since I last wrote, I’m on the morning shift tomorrow, 24.8.98, so I’ll see if I can get to Croatian Airlines and get my ticket booked for London!! (Four more working days to go and then I’m off!!). Will also have to sort out some booze and food for the party that we’re throwing on the 26th (this Wednesday) I’ve invited Zdenko + Muhammed. Will have to see how many others turn up! The weather had really turned cold considering it’s August, we’ve had no really hot days for the past week or so now. It’s still “shirt sleeve” order but what a difference from sweating every day. I even managed to wear one shirt twice in a row!! Regarding the Human Rights meeting at Pale the other day, I didn’t bother going as I was wiped out after the night shift. Another lousy thing is that the heel of my left shoe is coming adrift, it needs super-gluing back on. I’ve had to wear boots and they’re killing me!! Where the fillings dropped out of my tooth feels like a crater as well. I never realised that the dentist had removed so much tooth!!
Yesterday Markus and me piddled around and managed to get the satellite dish on the Astra channel. It needs quite a bit of fine-tuning but at least we can get some programmes.
I think that I’m losing weight as both my work belt and “civvy belt” are on the first notch now and my jeans feel baggy. No doubt that a few days in UK will soon bring the weight back!! Markus is on afters today so he’ll be back soon. To date I’ve got 100 DM left and I owe 200 DM phone bill. I’ll pay that on the 26th when I get paid, oh well, see you later!!

THURSDAY 27.8.98 2.18pm
Since last writing did the usual work + investigations – nothing really outstanding. Kept going to the PX, or should I say Makus did, and we got a hell of a load of beer + spirits in for the party. We had that yesterday, Muhammed, Zdenko, Ramic and the new Station Commander from Ilijaš came round yesterday at 3.45pm just when we were finishing work so we started the party then!! I stayed on beer all night and went to bed at about 11.30pm. Got up this morning at 9.30am and sorted the house out, it smelt of booze!! Several of the British contingent from Brčko also attended on a flying visit and we also had some German SFOR here so it went quite well.
Today I’m off to England at 4pm, I’ve got to be at the airport for 3pm. On the 25th I went out to book my ticket and found out that Croatian Air was fully booked together with Austrian Air and Lufthansa. I then walked into Ariana and managed to get a seat on Adria Air (Slovenia Airways) and it was cheaper by 40 DM (cost 660 DM)!! Markus is supposed to be taking me to the airport so I hope that he turns up on time. I fly back at 9.40am on 2nd September from Heathrow so I’ll have to make arrangements for the journey back.
I had a rather large hangover this morning but I feel a lot better now. It cost between Markus and I, 270 DM each. I’ve also paid my rent and washing 550 DM and my phone bill 200 DM. Total 1,020 DM – good isn’t it!! I hope that I can get through next month!!! Well I’ll get off now, see you when I get back!!
