Brian Read passed away on Saturday 19th August 1967 at the young age of 19 after an accident on the ship S.S. "ACHATINA" involving the parting of a mooring line. Whilst mooring the vessel at Nha Be, Saigon, the mooring rope slipped on the drum due to more weight coming upon it, and the end of the rope was pulled out of the hands of the A.B. working it. Brian was standing nearby and unfortunately the end of the rope swung round the drum end and hit him on the head, knocking him to the deck. The Chief Officer and Chief Steward gave first aid whilst a doctor was being summoned but did not respond to any treatment provided, and apparently died of brain damage. Brian was buried in Saigon, Vietnam (now Ho Chi Minh City) at St. Christopher's on 24th August '67, but sadly his grave was demolished for re-development purposes and the body cremated.
The loss of his brother left Michael devastated, being very close to his younger sibling. Michael's first child was coincidentally born on the anniversary of his brothers death, and after his third daughter decided to give her the name Catherine 'Brione' in memory of his brother. He eventually had a son whom he respectfully called Brian.
